How to Have a Healthy Relationship with Religion?

Finding harmony between autonomy and connection in your spiritual journey

Community is a beautiful offering—but it requires consciousness.

There aren’t many places that offer a stronger sense of community than a spiritual organization—but if you’re not conscious, it can come with risks. The good news? You don’t have to choose between autonomy and belonging. With awareness and intention, you can experience the beauty of both.

Respect leadership—but don’t replace God.
Leadership matters—without it, there’s chaos. But it’s just as important to remember not to place a leader above the Creator. Approach with respect, but always filter their guidance through your own personal relationship with the Divine.

Spiritual connection isn’t one-size-fits-all.
Religion is often known for promoting a one-size-fits-all approach—but that doesn’t work for everyone. What matters most is building the confidence to connect with the Creator in a way that feels authentic to you, even when others tell you otherwise.

Be the example your community needs.
Every community must continue evolving and growing—otherwise, it begins to wither. Take pride in your role as a spiritual leader by being a living example of excellence, deep connection to the Creator, and conscious, generous sharing.

Lead with love, not fear.
It’s inevitable—even though we know shame and guilt aren’t the highest forms of motivation, people still use them. When the opportunity arises, choose compassion for those still operating from fear, and be an example of someone who leads with love.

There’s wisdom in every teaching—if you’re willing to look deeper.
Every lesson, teaching, and practice holds merit—even if it takes some effort and reflection to see how it applies to you. The greatest teachers often spoke in parables, allowing each listener to find their own meaning. Approach teachings the same way: how can this be applied to your life?

You can heal, belong, and still be you.
Religious and spiritual communities can bring profound depth and connection to our lives.
If you're healing from religious trauma or longing to belong but unsure how, I’d be honored to help you cultivate the consciousness that allows you to enjoy the blessings of both community and autonomy.
